Artist Statement

My paintings begin with something that catches my attention—a fleeting effect of light, an interesting shape, a quiet moment, or the character of a place. Whether I am painting a coastal marsh, a garden, a figure, or a working boat along the waterfront, I am drawn to subjects that tell a story through light, color, and atmosphere.

As an artist, I am less interested in creating a perfect representation and more interested in capturing the feeling of a scene. I use expressive brushwork, texture, and layered color to create paintings that invite the viewer to linger and discover something new with each look.

Travel, teaching, and a lifelong curiosity about art continue to influence my work. Having lived and painted in different places, I am fascinated by the way light changes from one location to another and how those changes affect mood and perception. The coastal environment of North Carolina provides endless inspiration through its ever-changing skies, water, and landscape.

Painting is both an exploration and a conversation. Each canvas presents an opportunity to respond to what I see while bringing my own experiences and emotions to the work. My hope is that viewers will connect with the sense of beauty, energy, and wonder that inspired the painting in the first place.
